At Amayas, we work with truly powerful shamans who have grown up in the deep Amazon jungle their entire lives. They drank ayahuasca from a young age and learned to heal under the guidance of their ancestors. They drew their power from waterfalls, lagoons, plants, animals, and the universe – always under the influence of ayahuasca, which gradually transformed their being.
Below you will find more information about who our shamans are, how they work, and the unique gifts they bring from their connection to nature and the spiritual world.
Who is a shaman? The word shamanism, although it may seem so, is not derived from the South American region. “Shaman” is of ancient origin and comes from the Evenk language (the language of the indigenous people of Siberia), which means “one who sees” or “one who knows the origin”. If we are looking at who is a shaman from an academic perspective, a shaman is “an individual who acts as a medium in tribal or traditional communities”. Over the years, the understanding of what we think of as a shaman has changed, depending on how humanity has interpreted the characteristics of shamans.
Both men and women who are highly spiritual and dedicate their lives to practices that bring them closer to a connection with the universe or help them better understand reality are considered shamans. In Africa, Asia but also in South America, would probably know an answer to Who is a shaman question, as shamans there are considered spiritual leaders, authorities and healers in tribal communities.
You can’t answer the” Who is a shaman?” question without explaining the shamanic skills. They are widespread among different cultures and religions, with each shaman exhibiting a unique set of abilities. These skills may vary from individual to individual and from culture to culture, but in general, shamans develop the following skills and qualities in the area of healing:
Physical healing: shamans use knowledge of natural medicines, acupressure points, and meditation techniques to treat physical ailments.
Faith healing: This method involves the use of prayer, meditation, and miraculous healings, which may include the unexplained disappearance of serious illnesses such as cancer. It is important that patients always consult a doctor after such healings before stopping prescribed medications.
Mental and Emotional Therapy: Shamans offer insights into patients’ lives, provide direction or advice on major life decisions, and consult with natural or spiritual forces to help patients find inner peace and equanimity.

Louis, a 76-year-old shaman with deep roots in the Ecuadorian tradition, is the heir to a powerful and sacred Yachak lineage. His father, the famous and influential Yachak Don Ramon, was one of the most respected healers of his time. As the firstborn son, Louis was chosen to continue the family tradition and keep the wisdom of his ancestors alive. One of the best ayahuasca shamans.
From the age of eight, Louis began to learn the art of shamanism under the guidance of his father. He was initiated into the secrets of medicinal plants, spiritual rituals and a deep connection with nature. His training was demanding and required countless ceremonies and purifications in sacred places such as waterfalls, lagoons, mountains, caves and rivers. Each of these places imparted to him a specific power and knowledge that made him a powerful ayahuasca shaman.
Once he had attained full shamanic power, Louis began to pass on his knowledge to other disciples who wanted to follow the same path. He traveled to many countries to share his experiences and help people understand the profound meaning of ayahuasca and traditional healing. His dedication earned him recognition not only among his students but also among other shamans – he was considered one of the best shaman in the Ecuadorian Shaman Association.
Just as his father had passed on his knowledge to him, Louis has now passed it on to his only son, who continues the family tradition. Thanks to this strong lineage, the ancient knowledge of the Yachaca is preserved and passed on to serve future generations.
Louis’ ceremonies are exceptional in their depth and power. Each participant sits on a tree stump in front of the shaman, where they undergo a thorough cleansing. This process is extremely intense – Louis chants traditional icaros, sprinkles special cleansing water on the participants, and removes negative energies. His rituals bring not only a powerful spiritual cleansing, but also a deep inner peace and new life energy.
With his long practice and unwavering dedication to healing, Louis is a living legend among shamans. His sacred connection to nature and ayahuasca makes him a guide whose wisdom and healing power bring healing to those who seek him.
Louis, as ayahuasca shaman, with his deep knowledge of traditional shamanic healing, can help not only with spiritual and emotional problems, but also with serious health problems. His healing methods include working with sacred plants, energetic cleansing and deep spiritual connections that can support the body in its natural healing process.
He has already helped many people at the Amayas Center, including a client who suffered from chronic leukemia. Thanks to his ceremonies and healing practices, her health condition has significantly improved. Such cases show the power of traditional shamanic healing, which can offer help even where modern medicine sometimes does not find a solution.
